Strategies for Building Faction Combinations
Note: This article is not an ultimate guide to heroes but just a glimpse at the variety of characters Hero Wars: Alliance has. As new characters appear frequently, the game balance and heroes' interactions may change. Also, you can learn more about various skill interactions and situations that can occur during battle here.
Way of Eternity
Some Eternity heroes have skills that provide benefits when allies apply debuffs to opponents, whereas others profit from the buffed allies. Building a debuff- and buff-centric team can maximize the synergy between Eternity heroes. Here are some examples:
- Dante + Octavia. Dante and Octavia form a dodge combination: Dante increases the dodge of the whole team, while Octavia allows allies to dodge magic attacks.
- Iris + Tempus + Corvus. As Iris and Tempus prolong the duration of any debuffs, they can work well with Corvus because his defense reduction is considered a debuff.
- Iris + Octavia. Besides, Iris gains advantages from buffed allies. As Octavia's skills apply buffs to her allies, she and Iris can also be a great team.
- Morrigan + Octavia. Morrigan is another great match for Octavia: as Morrigan's summoned skeletons are treated as Eternity heroes, Octavia can apply buffs to them as well.
Way of Nature
In general, many Nature heroes benefit from extensive healing. Combining several Nature healers (Alvanor, Thea, Mojo, Oya) can provide enough healing and create synergetic bonuses.
- Oya + Mojo/Alvanor. Oya increases the critical hit chance of heroes who are healing themselves or receiving healing from Oya. Allied Nature heroes receive an increased bonus. As many Nature heroes provide healing, Oya is a good ally for any of them (e.g., Mojo, Alvanor).
- Oya + Yasmine. Oya's skill also makes her a good support for Yasmine, as the latter relies heavily on critical hits.
- Mojo + another healer. Mojo can be an additional healer: allies who were fully healed by Mojo's skill receive bonus energy, and Nature heroes even gain 10% more energy.
- Mushy and Shroom + Alvanor. Healing is essential for Mushy and Shroom, whose Shrooms will grow faster when receiving it. Thus, they might be a good match for Alvanor, as he heals allied Nature heroes twice as effectively and always protects Nature allies by decreasing damage from basic attacks.
Thus, a Nature-based line-up can include Mushy and Shroom, Mojo, and Alvanor, as they get plenty of healing and buffs combined. You can also add a Nature tank, Aurora, to protect the first line and give Shrooms enough time to grow and attack.
Way of Honor
Some Honor heroes' enhancing abilities work on allies in front of them or on frontmost heroes, so pay special attention to the positioning of heroes.
- Fafnir + Artemis + Tristan. Fafnir, Artemis, and Tristan are a popular synergetic trio. Thanks to his first artifact, Tristan provides armor penetration to the whole team. Fafnir takes advantage of this perk, allowing allied attacks that pierce armor to also stun opponents. And Artemis finishes off stunned rivals by hitting them with extra damage.
-
Tristan + a tank hero. Tristan is good at supporting tanks as he increases the physical attack of the allies in front of him. Also, thanks to the heroes in front of Tristan, his fourth skill grants him bonus energy. While any tank hero gains an advantage with Tristan supporting them, Honor ones will also repay the debt by enhancing Tristan's third skill in return.
- Helios + an Honor hero. Helios summons an invulnerable flaming sphere with his Solar Wind skill. The sphere deals 50% more damage for each allied Honor hero other than Helios. Also, Helios can heal allied Honor heroes by summoning any of his Spheres with his skills.
Way of Chaos
Many Chaos heroes have abilities based on sacrificing their own or their allies' health. So make sure you have plenty of healing to sustain the battle.
- Xe'Sha + a hero with sacrifice abilities. Xe'Sha increases her allies' magic attack, damaging them at the same time, if their current health is above 25%. She also gains a permanent magic bonus when an ally loses health from allied skills. So she works well with any hero with sacrifice abilities, e.g., Lilith, Cleaver, etc.
- Aidan + Kayla. The abilities of Aidan and Kayla complement each other, and they can even resurrect each other. For example, Aidan's skills include defending and supporting Kayla when she jumps in the middle of the opponent team.
- Aidan + a Chaos hero. Aidan's healing is aimed at heroes who sacrifice their health. He heals an ally with the lowest health and all allies who have lost health from friendly skills since the last time this skill was applied. Many Chaos heroes have sacrifice abilities, making Aidan a strong synergy pick not only for his sister Kayla, but also for other Chaos characters like Cleaver, Lilith, etc.
- Peech + a Chaos hero. Each ally that stands in front of Peech at the moment when she starts an attack increases all the damage she deals. The bonus is greater if an ally belongs to the Chaos faction. She also increases the area of effect of her basic attacks and first skill by 25% for each Chaos ally she starts the battle with.
Way of Progress
Many Progress heroes specialize in creating shields and applying buffs to allies. While they are not primary damage dealers, their role is to create opportunities for their teammates to shine by keeping them safe and controlling the opponents.
- Julius + Judge + Isaac. Julius, Judge, and Isaac create a highly shielded team. Julius ensures that Judge and Isaac remain safe on the backlines and have a chance to apply control effects. Isaac also increases armor penetration for Progress heroes.
-
Polaris + Judge/Arachne/Orion. Polaris works well with Progress heroes with stun abilities, e.g., Judge, Arachne, or Orion. When Polaris or her ally stuns an already-stunned opponent, a radiance effect is applied. Opponents under this effect take increased magic damage, especially from Progress heroes.
- Ginger + Julius + Judge + Isaac. Ginger also works well with Julius, Judge, and Isaac. They provide enough defense for her, and she increases their physical attack in return.
Way of Mystery
All these characters scale their abilities with the number of allied Mystery heroes, so a go-to strategy is to include multiple Mystery heroes in your team.
- Cascade + Satori/Heidi/Maya. Cascade is a versatile damage dealer who synergizes with Satori, Heidi, and Maya by increasing their damage with his Refluence skill. Also, Cascade's first artifact increases the magic penetration of the team, thus helping allies deal magic damage.
-
Amira + a Mystery healer. Amira can deal a lot of damage if she stays alive long enough. To prolong her life in battle, you can add Mystery healers to your team (Martha, Celeste, Maya), as each allied Mystery hero other than Amira raises the summoned gold's health by 10%.
- Amira + Folio + Rufus. Besides, pairing Amira with Folio might be helpful because his Ink Copy can tank part of the incoming damage to keep allies alive. So if Amira survives long enough, her Patronage will allow allies to ignore part of the magic damage, thus making Amira a good partner to Rufus against magic teams.
Frequently Asked Questions About Faction Combinations
Relying solely on faction alignment will not always guarantee victory. While faction synergy is essential, it is equally important to consider each hero's strengths and weaknesses. Some heroes or abilities excel against specific opponents regardless of faction. For example, even if Yasmine has perfect faction synergies in the team, it might still be a bad idea to put her against Helios.
Faction synergy provides valuable bonuses, but that does not mean your entire team must belong to the same faction. You can create powerful combinations by blending heroes from different factions and getting strong faction perks at the same time. For example, you can combine Chaos heroes who can deal enough damage with Nature heroes who can provide plenty of healing. Alternatively, gathering five heroes from different factions can also unlock unique tactical opportunities. Do not hesitate to experiment!
This article describes only some of the most apparent combinations. However, there are many possible faction combinations to choose from. For example, Corvus increases the stats of allied Eternity heroes and receives an advantage from their presence in the team. Thus, he will perform well with pretty much any Eternity hero, not just Iris and Tempus.
